Students are making plans to select rooms for next year and quite a few are also looking for roommates as well. The Office of Residence Life will host a “Meet and Greet” event on Tuesday, March 26th between 6-9pm in Johnson Dining Room. The goal of this event is to provide a forum for students that are looking for roommates to meet similar students and determine if they will be compatible to live together next year. I would highly encourage first year students to attend this event!

At least once a semester our campus practices one of the emergency siren drills in order to ensure that students, faculty, and staff are educated on the emergency procedure process. On Tuesday, March 26 at 1:35pm we will practice the SAFE siren.

The drill will begin with a sustained three-minute blast which denotes the SAFE siren. When campus members hear this siren, they should immediately secure themselves by locking their classroom, residence hall or office door and staying away from windows.

If someone is in a public space or a room without a door that locks, then they should refer to the public safe locations that are denoted in blue or green on the evacuation plans posted near building entrances. If students are are outside when they hear the siren, then they should move immediately to the nearest building’s public safe location. Do not remain outside.

When the drill is over, the ALL CLEAR signal, a seven-second blast, will sound to indicate campus members may leave their safe location.

In addition to the siren blasts, information will be communicated through the e2Campus emergency notification system via text message and voice mail.

Students are encouraged to watch the following youtube video which was created by a student club to help educate the campus about the different types of sirens.

It’s hard to believe, but Spring Break begins on March 9! Residence Life has shared the following information with all students and I thought it might be helpful to share this message on the blog as well.

Spring Break Closing

Spring Break closing begins on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 8 a.m. At this time, the residence halls will close. No one will be allowed to remain in the residence halls after 8 a.m. on March 9th. The Residence halls will reopen on Sunday, March 17, 2013, at 8 a.m. No one will be permitted in the residence halls before that time or at any other time during semester break.

The last meal served will be dinner at Prothro on Friday, March 8th, and dinner will be the first meal served in Prothro on Sunday, March 17, 2013.

If you encounter problems with timing, transportation, or other concerns regarding closing for break, please contact Residence Life by Monday, March 4th. There will be a shuttle service to and from the airport. This service is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis, and you must sign up with the chaplain’s office prior to the break. Another option is the local taxi service, Tabb’s Taxi. Please contact Cora at (434) 944-3437 or tabbcab@comcast.net.

Before Leaving:

· Defrost and unplug your refrigerator (please make sure there is no food left in it).

· Unplug all electrical items, with the exception of fish tanks. Please label the cord to the fish tank.

· Turn off lights and ceiling fans.

· Close and lock windows and leave shades/curtains open.

· Turn radiator down but not off (if applicable).

· Remove all valuables.

· Thoroughly clean room and empty trash.

· Discard all perishables from your room and the common area refrigerator; keep dry goods in a sealed container.

· Remove all personal items from hallways and common areas.

· Do not request that staff water your plants during break; they should survive if well-watered and covered with a plastic bag.

· If you need to leave a vehicle on campus during break, make arrangements with Campus Safety; secure bikes in bike racks.

· Lock the door to your room!

Residence Life staff will be entering rooms to ensure that all of the check-out requirements listed above have been completed and that rooms have been left in the appropriate condition for the break. College staff may be making health and safety checks and conducting routine maintenance or repairs in the residence halls during break.

The Office of First Year and SophoMORE Programs has partnered with several other offices on campus to provide two important programs this week. Tuesday at noon in Johnson dining room, we will offer a session that aims to help students start narrowing down a major. This session will provide practical advice on helping student explore majors/career fields and narrow down to a specific area of interest.
On Wednesday night at 6pm (also in Johnson dining room), we will be hosting a Financial Fitness session. This program will help students develop skills for balancing a checkbook and managing a bank account. Students will also learn basics about budgeting and student loan management.
We hope students of all ages will attend; especially the first years.

We are excited to welcome back students after Thanksgiving break; it’s great to see the campus come alive again with excited students! Most of the first year students that I’ve spoken to can’t believe how quickly their semester has flown by so far. It outlines some great resources that students should access during this potentially stressful time.
